About Dr. Filner

Dr. Filner has dedicated his medical practice to understanding and treating pain from the sufferer’s point of view. Recognizing that each person experiences pain uniquely, he has, over the last 20 years, continually sought to develop the best and most effective approaches to alleviate each patient’s pain.

His expertise ranges from the academic to the practical. He is an active member of the American Academy of Pain Management (AAPM), serving on its Technology and Education Committees; the American Pain Society; the International Association for the Study of Pain; the American Society of Pain Educators; and the International Myopain Society.

He is also on the Board of Advisors of the National Fibromyalgia Association and the National Fibromyalgia Partnership, Inc.

His medical education includes:

  • A medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York
  • Residency in anesthesiology at the University of California, San Diego
  • Certification from the American Board of Anesthesiology (1974)

He has held faculty positions at the following institutions:

  • Department of Anesthesiology at University of California, San Diego
  • Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York
  • Department of Anesthesiology of George Washington University, School of Medicine, Washington, DC (associate professor and director of the Cardiac Anesthesia Program)

He was appointed in 1979 as the first chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville.

Dr. Filner met Dr. Janet Travell, an internationally recognized authority on myofascial pain, at one of her seminars in 1983. This meeting sparked Dr. Filner’s interest in pursuing a practice in pain medicine. Dr. Travell not only helped him to diagnose and treat his own neck pain, she also became a mentor to him. She helped Dr. Filner start his pain practice in 1987, after he had practiced anesthesiology for 20 years. They collaborated for nearly ten years, which included speaking at meetings together, and honing Dr. Filner’s skills in diagnosing and treating myofascial pain. In 1988, Dr. Filner was certified by the American Academy of Pain Management (AAPM).

He continues to give presentations throughout the country today, including at AAPM, American Back Society, Center for Integrative Medicine at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso (the first complementary and alternative medicine center opened by the Department of Defense in November 2003), Arthritis Foundation, and Lupus Mid-Atlantic in Baltimore. In September, 2008, Dr. Filner will give a presentation on trigger point injections at the annual AAPM meeting.

Since 2004, he has been invited to speak on his expertise using low-level lasers to treat pain at the AAPM, the Missouri State Chiropractors Association, the Parker College of Chiropractic in Dallas, and other medical meetings.

Dr. Filner conducts training courses in the use of the ML830 laser for clinicians once or twice a month throughout the year. He is also available to speak to community or professional groups about chronic pain and its treatment.
